A shallow oval dish with a butterfly in relief on its floor: the dish and bowl are shape components, the butterfly is built from shape components (wings, body, head, antennae, carved spots) grouped together. 3D roughing with an end mill, raster finishing with a ball nose, then a tabbed cut-out. 260 x 200 x 25 mm. The butterfly is also in the store as a 3D clip.
One of the example projects that come with Carvio: the free trial opens it, and a licence lets you save your own files, G-code and jobs. Open it, look at how each toolpath is set up, then change it into your own.
Tools, speeds and feeds are examples. They were chosen so the preview looks right, not for any machine or material: pick your own tools and rates before you cut (the project notes say the same).

Project notes
Butterfly dish
An oval dish, 260 x 200 mm in 25 mm hardwood, with a butterfly raised on the floor of the bowl.
- The dish is two shape components on the Modeling tab: Dish top gives the whole outline a gentle 1.5 mm dome, and Bowl carves an 11 mm deep rounded hollow inside it.
- The butterfly is the Butterfly group: a shape component for each pair of wings, the body, the head and the antennae (all with a round profile scaled to an exact height), and the spots are carved into the wings as an inverted shape. Open the group in the Component Tree to change any part, or drop in the Butterfly clip from the Clipart tab to put it on another project.
- Toolpaths: Rough dish clears the bowl in Z levels with a 6 mm end mill, leaving 0.4 mm; Finish dish runs a 3.175 mm ball nose over the surface in a 45 degree raster at 0.4 mm steps; Cut out dish frees the dish with six tabs.
Tools, speeds and feeds are examples
The tools, feed rates, plunge rates, spindle speeds and pass depths in this project are examples only. They were chosen so the toolpaths look right in the preview, not for any particular machine or material. Before you cut, open each toolpath, pick a tool from your own Tool Database and set the rates your machine and material need. Check the material size and thickness in Job Setup too, and the post processor in Save Toolpaths.
Tools used
- End Mill 6mm · ⌀ 6
- Ball Nose 3.175mm (1/8") · ⌀ 3.175
