A round trivet with a trefoil knot in twisted rope, weaving over and under at its three crossings, inside a ring of beads. Both are made with the Rope modelling tool: the knot from one closed vector that crosses itself, the ring from a small bead component repeated round a circle. 3D roughing and finishing, then a tabbed cut-out. 220 mm across, 20 mm thick.

One of the example projects that come with Carvio: the free trial opens it, and a licence lets you save your own files, G-code and jobs. Open it, look at how each toolpath is set up, then change it into your own.

Tools, speeds and feeds are examples. They were chosen so the preview looks right, not for any machine or material: pick your own tools and rates before you cut (the project notes say the same).

Project notes

Knot trivet

A trivet for the table, 212 mm across in 20 mm walnut.

  • The knot is one closed vector, Trefoil knot, drawn the way a knot looks on paper: it crosses itself three times. Model > Rope... lays a three-strand rope along it, and Crossings: Alternate (knot) makes it go over, under, over all the way round, the way a real knot does.
  • The bead ring is the Rope tool with Link: Component: the Bead (link) component, a small domed oval, is repeated round the Bead ring circle with 1.5 mm between beads. The bead component is hidden after use; tick it in the Component Tree to see it, or change it and run the Rope tool again for a different chain.
  • Rough knot clears inside the Carving boundary with a 6 mm end mill, Finish knot runs a 3.175 mm ball nose over it, and Cut out trivet frees it with five tabs.

Tools, speeds and feeds are examples

The tools, feed rates, plunge rates, spindle speeds and pass depths in this project are examples only. They were chosen so the toolpaths look right in the preview, not for any particular machine or material. Before you cut, open each toolpath, pick a tool from your own Tool Database and set the rates your machine and material need. Check the material size and thickness in Job Setup too, and the post processor in Save Toolpaths.

Tools used

  • End Mill 6mm · ⌀ 6
  • Ball Nose 3.175mm (1/8") · ⌀ 3.175
