Setup Sheets and Project Notes #

Carvio can put the job on paper for whoever runs the machine: a setup sheet with the material, the datum and every toolpath, a tool sheet with every tool and its settings, and your own project notes. The sheets carry your company's name and logo, and you can print them or save them as a PDF to send to the shop floor.

Setup and Tool Sheets #

Open the sheets with File > Setup and Tool Sheets..., Toolpaths > Setup and Tool Sheets... or the Setup Sheets button on the Toolpaths tab. The window shows the pages exactly as they print; choose what goes in on the left and click Print... or Save PDF.... It opens as a window of its own, which you can keep open beside Carvio, unless Open big windows as windows of their own is unticked in Preferences.

The sheets describe the sheet and side of the job you are working on, with every toolpath of it that has been calculated (ticked or not). Every page has your company header at the top (logo, name and contact details on the left; the sheet's title, the date and the project's name on the right) and a footer with your footer text, the page number and the Carvio version.

Setup sheet #

The setup sheet is the operator's overview: the job's material, size, datum and home, then a table of every toolpath in the order it runs.

  • Job: job name, project file, material, size, XY datum, Z zero, units, the side (on a double-sided job) and sheet, the post processor, the home position, the safe Z, how many toolpaths and tools, and the estimated time.
  • Layout: a picture of the job (when Layout drawing is ticked).
  • Toolpaths: number, name, operation, tool, Z range, feed / plunge / spindle speed and time of each toolpath.
  • Notes: the Notes for the operator typed in this window.

Tool sheet #

The tool sheet lists every tool the job uses, in the order they are first needed, with a drawing of its shape. Each tool shows its number and name, type, diameter and angles, flutes, spindle speed, pass depth, feed, plunge and stepover, which toolpaths use it and how deep they go, and the tool's own notes from the Tool Database.

Hand it over with the tools: it is the checklist for loading the right bit at each change.

Layout drawing #

Adds a picture of the job to the setup sheet: the material with its 3D components shaded as in the 2D view, the vectors, and the cutting moves of the toolpaths in their colours, with the size, the datum and the Z zero underneath.

Project notes #

Prints the project's notes (File > Project Notes...) on pages of their own after the sheets, with their headings, lists, tables and pictures. The box is greyed out while the project has no notes.

Paper #

The paper size of the sheets: A4 or Letter. The same setting is in Preferences.

Orientation #

Portrait pages stand upright; Landscape pages lie on their side, so the toolpath table has wider columns and the layout drawing is a little shorter. Either way nothing is cut off: a value too long for its column goes on to more lines. When printing, the pages are turned to fit the paper in the printer. The same setting is in Preferences.

Notes for the operator #

A few lines for whoever runs the job (which clamps to use, "check the stock is flat", "leave the tabs"). They are printed in a Notes section at the end of the setup sheet.

For longer notes with pictures, use Project Notes instead.

Company #

Shows the company name and logo the sheets carry. Company settings... opens Preferences scrolled to its Company section, where you set the name, address, phone, email, website, logo and footer (see Company details). Without a logo of your own the built-in Carvio logo is used.

Zoom #

How large the pages show in the window: Fit width or 50% to 150%. It changes only the view, not the PDF.

Rebuild #

Lays the pages out again from the current job. The pages are rebuilt by themselves when you change an option here; use Rebuild after changing something else, such as a company setting.

Print #

Prints the pages on one of your printers. On Windows and macOS the system's own Print dialog opens, where you pick the printer, the copies and the pages; on Linux Carvio's Print dialog does. The pages print at their size (A4 or Letter, as chosen under Paper), made smaller only if the printer's paper is smaller.

Save PDF #

Saves the pages as a PDF file, named after the project with "sheets" added. The preview is the PDF: what you see is what prints.

Project Notes #

Project Notes is a notebook inside the project: write down the customer's wishes, the finish, the glue-up order, the settings that worked. Open it with File > Project Notes... (or Toolpaths > Project Notes...). The notes are saved with the project.

The window stays open beside your work and can be resized. You write in a formatted view, as in a word processor: headings look like headings, lists like lists. Behind the scenes the notes are kept as Markdown, which you can edit directly with the Markdown button at the right of the toolbar (and Formatted to come back).

The toolbar #

The toolbar along the top of the Project Notes window formats the text; most buttons also have a key.

Button What it does Key
Paragraph / Heading 1-6 / Code block The kind of the current block Ctrl+0 paragraph, Ctrl+1-Ctrl+6 headings
B Bold Ctrl+B
I Italic Ctrl+I
S Strikethrough Ctrl+Shift+X
<> Inline code Ctrl+E
Link Make the selection a link Ctrl+K
Bulleted / Numbered / Check list Turn the paragraph into a list item
Outdent / Indent Lift or nest a list item Shift+Tab / Tab
Quote A quoted block
Code block A block of monospaced text
Horizontal line A dividing line
Table A new 3 x 3 table
Image... A picture from a file
Undo / Redo Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Y

The text buttons look pressed in while the text at the cursor already has that style; click again to take it off. While the Markdown source is showing, the formatting buttons are greyed out.

Bold, italic and strikethrough #

B makes the selected text bold (Ctrl+B), I italic (Ctrl+I) and S struck through (Ctrl+Shift+X). With nothing selected, the style is switched on (or off) for what you type next.

Inline code #

<> (Ctrl+E) shows the selected text in a monospaced font, as for a G-code line, a file name or a setting such as $32=1.

The link button (Ctrl+K) makes the selected text a link. Type the Link address (a web address or a file next to the project) in the bar that opens and click Apply, or Remove to take a link off. See Links.

Lists #

Bulleted list, Numbered list and Check list turn the paragraph into an item of that kind of list; click the same button again to make it a plain paragraph. A check list has a box in front of each item that you can tick, handy for a list of steps.

Indent and Outdent #

Indent (Tab) nests a list item one level deeper under the item above it; Outdent (Shift+Tab) lifts it back out, and also takes a quote off. The buttons are greyed out when there is nothing to nest or lift.

Quote #

Quote sets the paragraph off as a quoted block with a bar down its left side, for a customer's words or a warning to the operator.

Code block #

Code block turns the paragraph into a block of monospaced text, kept exactly as typed, for G-code or settings copied from the controller.

Horizontal line #

Horizontal line puts a dividing line across the page at the cursor, to separate parts of the notes.

Table #

Table puts a new table of 3 columns and 3 rows at the cursor. See Tables for adding rows and columns.

Image #

Image... puts a picture from a file into the notes at the cursor. See Pictures.

Markdown and Formatted #

The Markdown button at the right of the toolbar shows the notes as Markdown text, to edit the source directly; Formatted goes back to the formatted view. The notes are kept as Markdown either way.

Tables #

With the cursor in a table, a bar above the text adds a row above or below, a column left or right, deletes the row or column, and sets the column's alignment (Left, Center, Right). Tab and Shift+Tab move from cell to cell.

Select some text and press Ctrl+K (or the link button), type the address and click Apply; Remove takes the link off. A link can be a web address or a file next to the project. Ctrl+click a link to open it.

Pictures #

Image... puts a picture from a file into the notes at the cursor. The picture is copied into the project file, so the project stays one file and the picture comes along when you move or send it. Pictures that the Markdown names as files on disk are copied in the same way.

Printing the notes #

The notes print after the setup and tool sheets: open Setup and Tool Sheets and tick Project notes. They keep their formatting, tables and pictures on paper.

On Linux (and wherever the system has no Print dialog of its own), Print... in the sheets and in the manual opens Carvio's Print dialog. The pages go to the printer as a PDF through the system's printing service (CUPS), which prepares them for the printer.

The printer to print on: the printers set up in the system, with the default one first. The printer you used last is chosen again next time. When none is listed, add one in the system's printer settings and click Refresh.

How many copies of the pages to print. Several copies come out as whole sets, one after the other.

Prints every page.

Prints only the pages typed here: page numbers and ranges separated by commas, like 1-3, 5. 4- is page 4 to the end. Print waits until the pages are ones the document has.

Prints on both sides of the paper, turned on the long edge, when the printer can. Printers that cannot print one side.

Lists the printers again (after adding or switching on a printer while the dialog was open).

Sends the pages to the printer. The status bar says when the printer has them, or what went wrong. For the manual, the pages are prepared in the background first, as when saving it as a PDF, and the status bar shows how far it got.
