Updates #

Carvio can find a newer version of itself and install it. Updates are free within the major version your licence covers (see Licence and the free trial).

Help > Check for Updates... asks carviocnc.com for the newest Carvio and says whether this copy is up to date. When a newer version is out, the window shows its number and offers to install it. With Check for updates when Carvio starts ticked in Preferences, Carvio asks by itself when it starts (at most once a day) and opens this window only when there is something new.

Carvio sends only its own version, your system and processor, and the kind of install it is. Nothing about you or your projects goes with it.

How an update is installed #

Carvio downloads the new version in the same form as the one you have:

Windows, installed with the .msi: Carvio downloads the new installer, starts it, and closes so it can replace the old version. Windows asks for permission as for any install.
Windows, the .exe on its own: the new program takes the place of carvio.exe in its folder. It starts when you restart Carvio.
macOS: the new Carvio.app replaces the one Carvio runs from (usually in Applications).
Linux AppImage, or the .tar.gz installed with install.sh: the file is replaced.
Linux .deb or .rpm: the package is downloaded to your Downloads folder and opened in your system's software installer, where you install it. Your distribution's package manager keeps track of it as before.

Before it installs anything, Carvio checks that the download is exactly the file released by Carvio: the list of release files is signed with the Carvio release key, and the download's checksum must match the list. A download that does not match is deleted and nothing changes. If Carvio can't update itself (it can't write to its folder, or it is a copy built from the source code), Download Page opens carviocnc.com/download instead.

Install Update #

Downloads the new version, checks it and installs it as described above. A bar shows how much has arrived. You can close the window and keep working while it downloads; it opens again when the update is ready.

Restart Now #

Restart Now closes Carvio (asking first about unsaved changes, as always) and starts the new version. Later leaves this version running; the new one starts the next time you open Carvio.

Skip This Version #

Carvio no longer offers this version when it starts. Help > Check for Updates... still shows it, and a later version is offered as usual.

What's New #

Download Page #

Opens carviocnc.com/download, where every version and form of Carvio can be downloaded by hand.

Close #

Closes the window. A download in progress carries on.
